YouTube has surged ahead of all other streaming platforms, according to a July 2024 report. This milestone underscores YouTube’s growing dominance in the entertainment industry.

In the coming months, it is expected to surpass Disney and become the largest media company in the world. 

YouTube’s Unstoppable Growth

Nielsen's The Gauge, which tracks TV viewing across major U.S. platforms, revealed that in July, streaming accounted for a record-breaking 41.4% of total TV consumption.

Breaking down the numbers among platforms such as YouTube, Netflix, and Prime Video, YouTube’s lead becomes even more apparent.

Many people recognize YouTube as a significant force in media, but few grasp just how massive it has become. 

MoffettNathanson analyst Michael Nathanson highlighted that, "Measured by revenue, YouTube was the second-biggest media company in the world last year."

In 2024, YouTube generated $54.2 billion in revenue, just $5.5 billion shy of Disney. Looking ahead to 2025, Nathanson predicts that YouTube will surpass Disney and claim the top spot.

Advertisers Flocking to YouTube

YouTube commands an extraordinary amount of user attention across all age groups. As media consumption patterns shift, advertisers have increasingly recognized YouTube’s unparalleled reach.

Initially slow to adapt, brands now heavily invest in YouTube ads to connect with its vast audience.

While some argue that Google itself is the largest media entity—generating nearly $350 billion in annual revenue—YouTube's performance remains staggering.

The Gauge analysis removes Disney’s $30+ billion annual revenue from its theme parks, which is a key part of Bob Iger’s empire. Although these financial groupings are debatable, the undeniable fact remains that YouTube has transformed into a media giant. And it is currently capturing an unmatched level of user engagement and advertiser investment.

The Future of YouTube TV

More evidence of YouTube’s dominance? Nathanson projects that YouTube TV, the platform’s live TV subscription service, will become the largest pay-TV provider in the U.S. by 2026.

As YouTube continues to gain subscribers, traditional providers like Comcast and Charter are experiencing declines.

Additionally, Nathanson estimates that if YouTube were a standalone company, its valuation would range between $475 billion and $550 billion, placing it between Meta’s and Netflix’s market values.

Unlike traditional media companies, YouTube lacks a single flagship program, movie, or series that defines its dominance—there is no "Stranger Things," "Barbie," or Marvel Cinematic Universe equivalent.
