A new painting depicting President Trump moments after surviving an assassination attempt at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, has been installed in the Grand Foyer of the White House.

The image, featuring Trump with a bloodied face and fist raised in defiance, has already become a defining symbol of his 2024 campaign.

It now hangs in one of the most prominent spots in the East Wing, replacing a portrait of former President Barack Obama.

The White House confirmed the painting's authenticity, although officials have not yet disclosed the artist or details surrounding its commission.

Obama, Bush Portraits Relocated

The rearrangement of presidential portraits followed the painting’s installation.

Obama's portrait, which had hung in the same location since 2022, has been moved across the Grand Foyer, replacing President George W. Bush’s image. In turn, Bush’s portrait now joins that of his father, President George H.W. Bush, near the White House’s Grand Staircase.

Although Trump’s official presidential portrait has not yet been released, insiders say the former president personally selected this moment from the July 2024 rally to occupy a position of honor in the White House.

The dramatic painting is reportedly inspired by images taken by Associated Press photographer Evan Vucci and New York Times photographer Doug Mills during the rally, moments after a gunman opened fire, injuring the former president and killing one bystander.

Trump, despite bleeding from his ear, raised his fist—a moment that quickly went viral and was widely circulated across media and campaign materials.

History, Funding, and Artistic Tradition

According to former White House Curator Betty Monkman, the tradition of official presidential portraits dates back to the 1960s, initiated under First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy. These portraits are typically funded by the White House Historical Association, a nonprofit organization.

The Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery is currently working on Trump and First Lady Melania’s official portraits, which are separate from those displayed in the White House.

A $650,000 donation from Trump’s Save America PAC is helping to fund the artwork, along with other private contributions.

Portrait Placement Customary, Officials Say

The reshuffling of portraits is not out of the ordinary. White House spokesperson Harrison Fields said it is common for artwork to be moved after a new president assumes office, noting that such changes often occur without ceremony.

“Typically, the images are moved in order down the Cross Hall to accommodate the addition of new presidential artwork,” Fields wrote on X. “The portraits have also been displayed by the Grand Staircase, which leads to the White House residence.”

Unveiling Still to Come

As of now, no date has been announced for the unveiling of Trump’s official portrait for the Smithsonian. Until then, the dramatic Butler rally painting serves as a powerful visual representation of the former president's resilience and defiance in the face of danger—qualities central to his 2024 presidential campaign.
