The Karen Read case continues to grip national attention as her retrial inches closer, with new developments casting fresh doubt on the original narrative surrounding the 2022 death of Boston police officer John O’Keefe. 

Read was O’Keefe’s girlfriend at the time of his death. She is now facing murder charges for the second time. The first trial resulted in a mistrial.

The Karen Read Case

Karen Read, a former finance professor, is charged with second-degree murder in the death of her boyfriend, John O’Keefe, who was found dead outside a fellow officer’s home in Canton, Massachusetts, in January 2022.

Prosecutors allege that Read struck O'Keefe with her SUV and left him to die in the snow after an argument.

But defense attorneys argue she’s being framed in a botched and biased investigation designed to protect others, namely law enforcement insiders. Her supporters claim the case is riddled with corruption, missing evidence, and inconsistent timelines.

Flirty Texts Spark New Theories

The emergence of flirtatious text messages between Read and Brian Higgins, a federal agent and one-time friend of O'Keefe, has injected new drama into the retrial preparations. The messages, introduced during cross-examination, hint at a possible romantic link between Read and Higgins shortly before O’Keefe’s death.

In a YouTube video segment from WCVB, legal analysts suggested that the texts could indicate jealousy as a potential motive, but not necessarily on Read’s part.

“The prosecution wants the jury to think Karen Read was angry at John. But these texts could also support the defense’s claim that someone else had a motive,” one commentator noted.

The defense maintains that O’Keefe entered the home of Brian Albert, the fellow officer whose house he was found outside. And he was beaten inside, then placed in the snow, contradicting the official claim that Read ran him over.

Judge Blocks Key Evidence

In a controversial decision, the judge barred any mention of the Sandra Birchmore case, another incident involving misconduct by Massachusetts law enforcement officers. Defense attorneys wanted to draw parallels between the mishandling of Birchmore’s case and what they argue is a cover-up in O’Keefe’s death.

According to a report by MSN News, legal experts believe the similarities in how both cases were handled raise serious questions about law enforcement transparency.
