April Jobs Report Shows New Jobs Added Despite Tariffs and Recession Fears

Jobs report

The U.S. economy added 177,000 new jobs in April, surpassing economists’ expectations despite mounting concerns over tariffs and recession risks.

The data, released Friday by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, reflects continued labor market resilience even as other indicators show signs of strain.

The strong labor report landed just days before the Federal Reserve is set to decide on interest rates. Market sentiment reacted positively to the news, with stock futures climbing shortly after the report’s release.

Jobs Data at a Glance

Here’s what the April jobs report revealed:

  • New jobs added: 177,000 (forecast was 138,000)
  • Unemployment rate: Held steady at 4.2%, as expected
  • Labor force participation rate: Increased from 62.5% to 62.6%
  • Employment-to-population ratio: Rose from 59.9% to 60%
  • March revision: Lowered from 228,000 to 185,000
  • February revision: Lowered from 117,000 to 102,000
  • Net revisions: 58,000 fewer jobs than previously reported
  • Wage growth: Average hourly earnings rose 3.8% year-over-year to $36.06

Sector Performance: Healthcare Leads the Way

Healthcare once again emerged as the key driver of job growth:

  • Healthcare: +50,600 jobs
  • Transportation and warehousing: +29,000 jobs
  • Retail trade: -1,800 jobs
  • Manufacturing: -1,000 jobs (less than the expected 5,000 loss)
  • Federal employment: -9,000 jobs

Daniel Zhao, lead economist at Glassdoor, noted that "the slower acyclic sectors like healthcare and government jobs grow, the less buffer there is for the job market to avoid a recession when those more cyclical sectors start to experience economic headwinds."

Tariffs and Trump Administration Policies: Too Soon to Tell?

The report arrives shortly after President Donald Trump announced tariffs on April 2, with a 90-day pause issued on April 9 for many of them. While the impact of tariffs remains unclear, economists say it’s premature to gauge their full effect.

“This data is too soon to show the full impacts of the tariffs,” said Daniel Zhao.

Kevin Rinz, senior fellow at the Washington Center for Equitable Growth, emphasized the delayed economic feedback:

“Even in the optimistic scenario in which tariffs have the effect of bringing production of some goods back to America, those gains are likely years away.”

“Large cuts to the federal workforce and the cancellations of many government contracts will also be a drag on payroll growth… while tighter immigration flows will weigh on labor supply dynamics,” said Lydia Boussour, senior economist at EY.

Recession Concerns Persist

Despite job growth, the broader economic picture remains cloudy. The U.S. recently experienced its first GDP contraction in three years. Claudia Sahm, chief economist at New Century Advisors, warned:

“We’re on a path toward a recession, but it is clear what can get us off that path, and that would be less aggressive policies.”

KPMG's Diane Swonk added to the caution:

“The deterioration in job security we are seeing is particularly worrisome… the drop in consumer attitudes is in recession territory.”

What’s Next for the Fed?

The Federal Reserve is expected to hold interest rates steady at its next meeting. According to CME FedWatch, there's a 97% chance of a rate hold, slightly higher than before the release of the jobs data.
