Ghislaine Maxwell’s attorney, David Markus, has expressed hope that President Donald Trump will pardon the former British socialite. She has been convicted for her role in sex trafficking crimes connected to disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein. 

Maxwell is currently serving a 20-year sentence in a Florida prison for trafficking a minor for sexual abuse.

Maxwell's Lawyer Urges Presidential Pardon

Following a meeting with Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche on July 25, Markus spoke to reporters outside the facility in Tallahassee. “We haven’t spoken to the president or anybody about a pardon just yet,” Markus said. 

However, he added, “The president this morning said he had the power to do so. We hope he exercises that power in the right and just way."

Trump, when asked earlier that day if he had considered pardoning Maxwell, responded, “I'm allowed to do it, but it's something I have not thought about. I certainly can't talk about pardons now.”

Trump's Response: “Don’t Talk About Trump”

While boarding a flight to Scotland, Trump downplayed the matter, saying, “You’re making a very big thing over something that’s not a big thing.” He added, “Talk about Clinton… Talk about all of [Epstein’s] friends… Don’t talk about Trump.”

Trump, who had social ties to Epstein in the 1990s, banned Epstein from Mar-a-Lago years before Epstein’s arrest and death in jail. But questions about his relationship with the late financier continue to surface. 

Earlier reports indicated Trump’s name appears “multiple times” in Epstein-related DOJ files—a claim Trump denies and has sued The Wall Street Journal over for defamation.

“I’ll give you a list,” Trump said when asked who else should be scrutinized over ties to Epstein.

DOJ Interest in Maxwell’s Information

Maxwell’s two recent meetings with Blanche, who previously served as Trump’s personal defense attorney, raised eyebrows.

In a July 22 post on X, Blanche wrote, “If Ghislaine Maxwell has information about anyone who has committed crimes against victims, the FBI and DOJ will hear what she has to say.”

Democratic Rep. Dan Goldman voiced concern that Blanche's meeting was politically motivated: “Tacitly floating a pardon for Maxwell in return for information that politically benefits President Trump.”

Mounting Pressure for Transparency

Public and congressional calls for the Justice Department to release its Epstein-related files have intensified—especially after DOJ and FBI recently declined to make them public. The controversy was amplified by reports from USA Today and MSN highlighting potential political manipulation.

Maxwell is also scheduled to appear before the House Oversight Committee on August 11 after receiving a congressional subpoena.

“She is being talked to by a very smart man, by a very good man, Todd Blanche,” Trump said. “I don’t know anything about the conversation. I haven’t really been following it.”
