Army Prosecutors Charge Fort Stewart Sergeant in Shooting of Five Soldiers

Army Prosecutors

Army prosecutors have filed attempted murder charges against Sgt. Quornelius Radford, accused of shooting five fellow soldiers and attempting to shoot a sixth at Fort Stewart, Georgia, on August 6. One of the victims was described as an “intimate partner” of the 28-year-old sergeant, according to Michelle McCaskill, spokesperson for the Army Office of Special Trial Counsel. The victim’s name has not been released due to the nature of the alleged domestic violence.

Multiple Serious Charges Filed

On August 12, military prosecutors brought a series of charges under the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ), as confirmed by Maj. Charlie Egan, spokesperson for the 3rd Infantry Division. The charges include:

  • Two specifications of attempted premeditated murder
  • Four specifications of attempted unpremeditated murder
  • One specification of domestic violence
  • Three specifications of aggravated assault inflicting grievous bodily harm
  • Three specifications of aggravated assault with a dangerous weapon

Radford, an automated logistical noncommissioned officer, allegedly used a personal handgun during the attack inside the 703rd Brigade Support Battalion’s company operations facility.

Details of the Incident

Brig. Gen. John Lubas, commanding officer of Fort Stewart and the 3rd Infantry Division, confirmed that Radford carried out the shooting at his workplace. He is currently being held at the Naval Consolidated Brig Charleston in South Carolina pending trial. The military justice system does not use cash bail but considers whether a defendant is a flight risk or a danger to others before determining pretrial confinement.

At an August 7 ceremony honoring soldiers who intervened during the shooting, Army officials declined to comment on Radford’s motive. The Army Criminal Investigation Division did not respond to requests for comment.

Possible Motive and Personal Struggles

The domestic violence charge may indicate how prosecutors plan to frame the alleged motive. Radford’s father, Eddie Radford, told The New York Times that his son had complained about racism at his unit and had sought a transfer. The sergeant also faced an August 20 court date in Liberty County, Georgia, related to a DUI arrest in May.

“Our family is still trying to understand what happened,” Eddie Radford said.

Army Prosecutors Continue Investigation

Radford has not commented on the allegations, and court records for his case are not yet available in the docket. The USA Herald previously reported that Radford allegedly sent a foreboding message before the shooting, but the Army has not confirmed the content of that message.

As the investigation continues, Fort Stewart remains on alert, and the trial could provide more details about what led to the violent events of August 6.
