Cliff Lambert Murder: Justice Finally Served in 17-Year Legal Saga of Palm Springs Art Dealer

Cliff Lambert Murder

After nearly two decades of trials, appeals, and controversy, justice has finally been served in the Cliff Lambert murder, one of California’s most sensational and bizarre criminal cases. The retired Palm Springs art dealer — described by friends as a “rich, gay socialite” — was brutally killed in 2008 in an elaborate scheme masterminded by two con artists posing as high-society figures.

An Elaborate Plot Unfolds in Palm Springs

According to prosecutors, Kaushal Niroula — a self-proclaimed exiled prince from Nepal — and Daniel Garcia, a San Francisco socialite with a checkered past, conspired with four accomplices to steal Lambert’s wealth, identity, and ultimately, his life.

Lambert, 74, was killed on December 5, 2008, during what he believed was a business meeting with a lawyer representing a deceased art collector. In reality, the meeting was a setup. “The man posing as a lawyer was actually Niroula,” said former Riverside County Deputy District Attorney Rob Hightower, who prosecuted the case.

Hightower told Dateline NBC that Niroula secretly allowed two accomplices into Lambert’s Palm Springs home, where they fatally stabbed him and buried his body in a shallow grave north of Los Angeles. The killers then forged powers of attorney, drained over $200,000 from Lambert’s bank accounts, and even attempted to sell his home.

Cliff Lambert Murder: A Tale of Deception, Identity Theft, and Murder

Daniel Garcia — who once gained media attention for accusing San Francisco financier Thomas White of sexual abuse — allegedly met Lambert through an online dating site months before the murder. Garcia introduced Lambert to Niroula, setting the deadly plan in motion.

“Garcia was charming, worldly, and manipulative,” Hightower said. “He had the kind of personality that could make anyone trust him.”

Within months, all six suspects were arrested. Garcia, Niroula, and David Replogle, a San Francisco lawyer, were among those charged with murder, conspiracy, and grand theft. They were convicted in 2011 and 2012 and sentenced to life without parole.

Secret Recordings and Overturned Convictions

The case took an unexpected turn in 2016 when Niroula filed a petition for a new trial, alleging judicial bias. A secret recording — made illegally during his 2012 trial — captured Judge David Downing making derogatory comments about Niroula’s HIV status and about the defendants.

In 2020, after prosecutors agreed not to oppose retrials, a judge overturned the convictions of four defendants. Retrials began two years later, with Replogle convicted again in August 2022. Weeks later, Niroula was killed in jail, allegedly by another inmate, as detailed in a wrongful death lawsuit filed by his family.

By 2023, all remaining defendants had been convicted again. This year, Daniel Garcia, 43, and David Replogle, 76, were both sentenced to life in prison without parole, bringing an end to a 17-year legal odyssey.

“Justice Has Finally Been Served”

“This case tested the limits of California’s justice system,” Hightower said following the final sentencing. “But after 17 years, justice for Cliff Lambert has finally been served.”

Lambert’s story was featured in a Dateline NBC episode titled “The Prince, The Whiz Kid, and the Millionaire,” chronicling how greed, deception, and betrayal destroyed a man known for his generosity and love of art.

Even as appeals continue, the resolution of the case closes one of Palm Springs’ most haunting chapters — a story of manipulation, false identities, and a community forever changed.
