Scott Adams, the controversial cartoonist best known as the creator of "Dilbert," has died at the age of 68 after a battle with advanced prostate cancer, according to his former wife.

 Adams, whose work once defined office humor for millions of readers worldwide, spent his final months openly discussing his deteriorating health and legacy with fans of his online program.

Scott Adams' Death Confirmed During Livestream

Adams’ ex-wife, Shelly Miles, confirmed his death during a Jan. 13 livestream of "Real Coffee with Scott Adams" a show he hosted until his health sharply declined.

“Hi, everyone. Unfortunately, this isn’t good news,” Miles said on the broadcast. “Of course, he waited ’til just before the show started, but he’s not with us anymore.”

According to Miles, Adams’ passing was peaceful, and he was surrounded by loved ones. She also noted that Adams appeared to sense his death was imminent during a conversation the day before.

“He knew it was a different feeling than how he had been feeling before,” she said.

Scott Adams Public Battle With Terminal Cancer

In May, Scott Adams revealed that he had been diagnosed with prostate cancer that had metastasized to his bones. During a New Year’s Day episode of Real Coffee with Scott Adams, he delivered a blunt assessment of his prognosis.

“My chances of recovery are essentially zero,” Adams told viewers.

That same day, Adams wrote what would become his final message, which Miles read aloud following the announcement of his death.

“If you are reading this, things did not go well for me,” Adams wrote. “My body failed before my brain.”

He also addressed any speculation about outside influence on his decisions, adding, “Please know I’m free of any craziness or any inappropriate influence of any sort, I promise.”

Faith, Final Reflections, and a Lasting Message

In a deeply personal portion of his farewell letter, Adams revealed a late-life turn toward Christianity, despite previously identifying as a nonbeliever.

“I accept Jesus Christ as my lord and savior and look forward to spending an eternity with him,” Adams wrote. “The part about me not being a believer should be quickly resolved if I wake up in heaven.”

Adams closed his message with gratitude and a call to action for his audience.

“I had an amazing life,” he wrote. “If I got any benefits from my work, I’m asking that you pay it forward as best as you can. That’s the legacy I want: be useful.”

The Rise of “Dilbert” and Corporate Satire Fame

Launched in 1989, “Dilbert” became a cultural phenomenon by skewering corporate bureaucracy and white-collar absurdities. The strip drew heavily from Scott Adams’ own experience working at Pacific Bell, later part of AT&T.

Over the next decade, “Dilbert” grew into one of the most widely syndicated comics in the world. Adams received the National Cartoonists Society’s prestigious Reuben Award in 1997, and by 2013, the strip reportedly appeared in approximately 2,000 newspapers across 65 countries, translated into 25 languages.

The legacy of Scott Adams and “Dilbert” took a dramatic turn in 2023 after Adams made racially charged comments during an online discussion of polling data. In response, numerous newspapers—including those in the USA TODAY Network—announced they would no longer carry “Dilbert.” The strip was later relaunched as a webcomic under the name Daily Dilbert Reborn on the Locals platform.

Dilbert: Books and Workplace Satire

In addition to “Dilbert,” Scott Adams authored several books spanning philosophy, self-help, and political commentary. Notable titles include God’s Debris (2001), How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big (2013), Loserthink (2019), and Reframe Your Brain (2023).
