Iran-Israel War Rages Into Day 25: Trump Claims Peace Talks While Tehran Flatly Denies Any Negotiations

WASHINGTON, D.C. — As the U.S.-Israel military campaign against Iran enters its 25th day, a deepening rift has emerged between Washington and Tehran over whether peace negotiations are even taking place — raising fresh questions about when and how the deadliest Middle East conflict in decades might end.

President Donald Trump declared Tuesday that negotiations with Iran are ongoing and ordered a five-day pause on strikes targeting Iranian energy infrastructure as a show of good faith. But Iran swiftly and categorically denied any talks are happening, with a senior Iranian official dismissing Trump's claims as “fake news.”

Conflicting Narratives From Washington and Tehran

The disconnect between the two sides could not be sharper. Speaking from the White House, Trump told reporters that back-channel communications had produced “real progress” and that a framework for de-escalation was being discussed. He pointed to the five-day energy infrastructure pause as evidence of American willingness to negotiate.

Tehran saw it differently. An Iranian source who spoke to international media confirmed that Washington had initiated “outreach,” but insisted that the contacts had not risen to the level of formal negotiations. Iranian state media carried statements from senior officials calling the American characterization misleading and designed to create political cover domestically.

Strikes and Counterstrikes Continue

On the ground, the fighting showed no signs of slowing. Israel carried out a massive wave of airstrikes on central Tehran on Tuesday, targeting what the Israeli Defense Forces described as military command centers and missile production facilities. Iran responded with a barrage of ballistic missiles aimed at Israeli territory, including one that struck a street in central Tel Aviv and damaged a residential apartment building.

The Pentagon confirmed it is preparing to deploy additional troops to the region, though officials declined to specify the number or timeline. U.S. naval assets in the Persian Gulf and Eastern Mediterranean have been on heightened alert since the conflict began.

What It Means for Americans

The ongoing hostilities are being felt well beyond the Middle East. Oil prices have surged past $105 per barrel — up nearly 30% since fighting began — sending gasoline prices climbing at pumps across the United States. The national average for a gallon of regular unleaded crossed $4.50 this week, with analysts warning prices could top $5.00 if the conflict disrupts shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

Wall Street has responded with volatility. The Dow Jones Industrial Average has swung more than 500 points in five of the last ten trading sessions, with defense stocks rallying while energy and travel sectors have seen heavy selling on uncertainty.

A Timeline of 25 Days of Conflict

The conflict erupted on February 27 after a series of escalating provocations that had been building for months. What began as targeted Israeli strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities quickly expanded into a broader campaign involving U.S. military assets. Iran retaliated with missile salvos against Israeli cities and attacks on U.S. military installations in the region, drawing American forces deeper into direct combat operations.

Over the past three and a half weeks, hundreds of strikes have been carried out by both sides. Civilian casualties in Iran have mounted, with international humanitarian organizations calling for an immediate ceasefire. Israel has reported dozens of casualties from Iranian missile attacks, though its Iron Dome and Arrow defense systems have intercepted the majority of incoming threats.

What Comes Next

Diplomatic observers say the conflicting narratives around negotiations are themselves a sign that both sides may be testing the waters without wanting to appear weak. A senior fellow at a Washington-based foreign policy institute noted that back-channel outreach often precedes formal talks by days or weeks, and that public denials are standard practice in Middle Eastern diplomacy.

For now, Americans should prepare for continued uncertainty. With additional U.S. troops potentially heading to the region, energy prices climbing, and no clear diplomatic offramp in sight, the Iran-Israel conflict remains the dominant geopolitical story heading into spring 2026.

This is a developing story. USA Herald will continue to provide updates as the situation evolves.
