A high-profile investigation has been launched in Australia after actor Ruby Rose accused pop star Katy Perry of sexual assault in an alleged incident dating back more than a decade. The claims, which erupted on social media over the weekend, have triggered a formal police probe in Victoria and a swift denial from Perry’s representatives, who call the allegations “categorically false.”

The case is now drawing intense attention across entertainment and legal circles, with authorities confirming they are actively examining a “historical sexual assault” report tied to events allegedly occurring in Melbourne in 2010.

Police Open Active Investigation Into 2010 Allegation

Victoria Police confirmed the probe is underway, stating: “Melbourne Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team detectives are investigating a historical sexual assault that occurred in Melbourne in 2010,” a representative said. The statement continued: “Police have been told the incident occurred at a licensed premises in Melbourne’s [central business district]. As the investigation remains ongoing, it would be inappropriate to comment further at this stage.”

In Victoria, there is no statute of limitations on reporting a sexual offense, allowing historical claims to be investigated regardless of how much time has passed.

The development has placed renewed scrutiny on the allegations and the public statements surrounding them, as both sides prepare for what could become a lengthy investigative process.

Ruby Rose Makes Public Accusations

Ruby Rose, 40, widely known for roles in Netflix’s Orange is the New Black, The CW’s Batwoman, and John Wick: Chapter 2, first made the allegations publicly on April 12 in a series of now-deleted replies on Threads.

The posts appeared in response to discussion about Katy Perry’s reaction to Justin Bieber’s Coachella performance.

Rose wrote: “Katy Perry sexual [sic] assaulted me at spice market nightclub in Melbourne. Who gives a shit what she thinks.”

In further comments responding to questions from users about what allegedly happened, she described a disturbing encounter, writing: “She didn’t kiss me. She saw me ‘resting’ on my best friends lap to avoid her and bent down, pulled her underwear to the side and rubbed her disgusting vagina on my face until my eyes snapped open and I projectile vomited on her.”

She also addressed why she did not speak out earlier, suggesting it was tied to professional pressure and a U.S. visa arrangement involving Perry.

In another deleted post, Rose wrote, “I was only in my early 20s. I’m now 40. It has taken almost 2 decades to say this publicly. Though I am so grateful to have made it long enough to find my voice, it just shows how much of an impact trauma and sexual assault takes. Thank you for seeing me.”

Rose later said she would contact police regarding the allegations, and on Tuesday she posted that she had “finalized all of my reports”, adding that she could no longer publicly comment on the matter.

Katy Perry Team Strongly Denies Claims

Katy Perry’s representatives moved quickly to reject the accusations after they surfaced online.

In a statement released on April 13, Perry’s team said: “The allegations being circulated on social media by Ruby Rose about Katy Perry are not only categorically false, they are dangerous reckless lies.”

The statement continued: “Ms. Rose has a well-documented history of making serious public allegations on social media against various individuals, claims that have repeatedly been denied by those named.”

As the investigation continues, both the legal process and public debate surrounding the allegations are expected to intensify, with authorities maintaining that no further comment will be made while inquiries remain ongoing.
