Strait of Hormuz reopening: Iran declares passage open as U.S. blockade holds

Strait of Hormuz reopening

The Strait of Hormuz reopening unfolded Friday like the lifting of a global chokehold—yet the release came with a catch. Iran announced that commercial vessels could once again pass freely through the strategic waterway, but U.S. President Donald Trump quickly countered that an American naval blockade targeting Iranian shipping would remain firmly in place.

The narrow strait, a vital artery carrying roughly 20% of the world’s oil, now sits at the center of a high-stakes geopolitical standoff—open in theory, constrained in practice.

Iran declares waterway open amid fragile truce

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced on social media that the strait was fully accessible to commercial traffic, signaling a potential easing of tensions following a 10-day ceasefire between Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah group in Lebanon.

The declaration suggested a return to normalcy in one of the world’s most critical shipping lanes, where even minor disruptions ripple through global energy markets like tremors beneath a fault line.

Trump initially echoed the optimism, posting that the strait was “fully open and ready for full passage.” But within minutes, his tone shifted sharply.

U.S. maintains pressure despite reopening

In a follow-up statement, Trump said the U.S. Navy’s blockade would continue “UNTIL SUCH TIME AS OUR TRANSACTION WITH IRAN IS 100% COMPLETE,” underscoring Washington’s strategy of sustained pressure tied to negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program.

He added that Iran, with U.S. assistance, is working to clear naval mines from the strait—remnants of escalating tensions that had turned the waterway into a maritime minefield.

Iranian officials pushed back. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei called the blockade a violation of the ceasefire agreement, warning that Tehran would respond if Washington failed to honor its commitments.

“No leniency will be shown,” Baghaei said, emphasizing that Iran retains oversight of the strait and stands ready to act.

Confusion and internal dissent in Tehran

Despite Araghchi’s announcement, uncertainty lingered داخل Iran’s own media landscape. The Fars news agency, closely aligned with the Revolutionary Guard, questioned the clarity of the reopening decision and pointed to a “strange silence” from the Supreme National Security Council.

The Mehr news agency echoed those concerns, reporting that such a move would typically require approval from Iran’s top leadership.

The council has taken on heightened authority amid questions surrounding Mojtaba Khamenei, who was reportedly injured earlier in the conflict, further clouding the chain of command.

Ceasefire holds, but tensions simmer

The reopening comes as a ceasefire in Lebanon appears to be holding—at least on the surface—after nearly seven weeks of war involving Israel, the U.S., and Iran.

Trump declared that Israel is now “prohibited” from launching further strikes on Lebanon, signaling Washington’s push to contain the conflict. The State Department clarified that restriction applies only to offensive operations, not self-defense.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed Israel accepted the ceasefire at Trump’s request but warned that military operations against Hezbollah are far from over.

He said Israel had destroyed about 90% of the group’s missile stockpiles but added, “have not finished yet.”

Violence flickers despite truce

Even as the ceasefire took hold, signs of instability persisted. In southern Lebanon, sporadic shelling was reported by the Lebanese army and U.N. peacekeepers.

An Israeli strike near Kounine hit a car and motorcycle, killing one person and wounding three, including a Syrian national, according to Lebanon’s Health Ministry—the first fatal incident since the truce began.

There was no immediate response from Israeli forces or Hezbollah.

Meanwhile, in Beirut, bursts of celebratory gunfire marked the ceasefire’s start, as displaced families cautiously began returning home despite official warnings.

Oil markets react, diplomacy continues

Global oil prices dipped Friday amid hopes that easing tensions could stabilize supply routes. The head of the International Energy Agency had previously warned that failure to reopen the strait could deepen an already fragile energy crisis.

Behind the scenes, mediators are working to bridge divides on three core issues: Iran’s nuclear program, the Strait of Hormuz, and compensation for wartime damage.

Trump hinted that progress may be near, suggesting Iran could agree to hand over enriched uranium—a claim not confirmed by Tehran or intermediaries.

“The Iranians want to meet,” Trump said. “They want to make a deal.”

A war’s toll and uncertain endgame

The broader conflict has left a devastating human toll: at least 3,000 dead in Iran, more than 2,290 in Lebanon, 23 in Israel, and additional casualties across Gulf states. Thirteen U.S. service members have also been killed.

As negotiations inch forward, the Strait of Hormuz stands as both symbol and leverage—a gateway that is open, yet tightly gripped by competing powers, like a door unlocked but still held shut by opposing hands.
