Pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson will begin marketing four of its drugs on the Trump administration’s TrumpRx website starting Friday, according to information obtained by CBS News.

Deal Ties Drug Pricing to Policy Trade-Offs

The move stems from a voluntary agreement reached in January between the company and the administration of Donald Trump.

Under the deal, Johnson & Johnson agreed to expand access to more affordable prescriptions—particularly through Medicaid—and list medications on the TrumpRx platform. In return, the company secured exemptions from tariffs tied to the administration’s broader economic policies.

The arrangement reflects a balancing act, where healthcare affordability and trade policy intersect like two gears driving the same machine.

Key Medications Added to TrumpRx

Among the drugs being offered is metformin, one of the most commonly prescribed treatments for Type 2 diabetes.

Also included are metformin extended release, Invokana—another diabetes medication—and Xarelto, a widely used blood thinner.

These additions bring familiar names into a new marketplace designed to target cost-conscious patients.

Expansion Follows Major Investment

The company’s participation comes alongside a previously announced $55 billion investment in research and manufacturing facilities in Pennsylvania and North Carolina.

With Johnson & Johnson’s entry, the TrumpRx platform has more than doubled the number of medications available since its launch in February, signaling rapid expansion of the initiative.

Who Benefits From the Pricing Model

Despite the promise of lower costs, the pricing structure is not universal.

The discounted rates on TrumpRx are primarily available to patients who are uninsured or whose insurance does not cover the listed medications, requiring them to pay full out-of-pocket prices.

For insured patients, costs are often already reduced through existing coverage, meaning the platform targets a specific segment of the population.
