A prominent preservation group is rushing to federal court to stop the Trump administration from painting the iconic Reflecting Pool at the Lincoln Memorial a bold “American flag blue,” arguing the move violates federal law and disfigures one of America’s most sacred landmarks.

The Cultural Landscape Foundation filed a lawsuit Monday seeking an immediate halt to the project, claiming the Interior Department failed to conduct required public consultation and environmental reviews before draining the pool and beginning the controversial paint job.

Lawyers for the foundation argue that turning the long-gray basin bright blue represents a “permanent blemish” on the National Mall. They say the change destroys the solemn visual connection between the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial.

Foundation President Charles A. Birnbaum stated:

“A blue-tinted basin is more appropriate to a resort or theme park.”

The project is part of President Trump’s broader push to reshape cultural and historic sites in Washington, DC. Trump personally drove across the drained pool last week to inspect the work, praising the new color as “much more beautiful than it was new.”

This unusual battle over paint color goes far beyond aesthetics. It highlights the growing tension between those who see the National Mall as a living, evolving space and those who view it as a sacred, untouchable piece of American heritage that should remain unchanged.
