What Readers Need to Know

  • Darya Shipilova’s mother says the widely circulated story that her daughter became infected after breaking a laboratory test tube does not make sense.
  • Russian authorities say extensive testing found no pathogen connected to Shipilova’s work and have now declared the region’s public-health response complete.
  • WHO still says it has not received enough information to determine exactly what killed the 28-year-old researcher.

The mystery surrounding the death of 28-year-old Russian infectious-disease researcher Darya Shipilova has taken a deeply personal turn. Her mother, Svetlana Shipilova, is publicly rejecting one of the most alarming explanations circulated about her daughter’s death — that Darya became infected after breaking a test tube while working at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute of Siberia and the Far East.

Svetlana Shipilova is herself a medical professional. And she is not merely questioning the story. She says it does not make scientific sense.

“I know the truth,” she reportedly told the Russian outlet Glubina. “I'm having to fend off stupid acquaintances who believed all this. The clever ones didn't believe it, of course.”

She then directly challenged claims that her daughter could have accidentally shattered a laboratory tube containing a dangerous pathogen.

“Not even all medical professionals understand it's impossible to break a test tube like that,” Shipilova said. “Even if you fling it at the wall. Only an amateur could say something like that.”

“Even hypothetically, you simply can't spill what's inside or break the tube. They're that well protected.”

Then came her most serious accusation.

“They simply let my daughter die.”

There is currently no publicly established evidence proving medical negligence caused Shipilova’s death. But her mother has said she had not initially received an official document explaining the cause of death and has questioned both the laboratory-accident narrative and her daughter’s medical treatment.

Darya Shipilova died October 2 after developing severe pneumonia. Russia’s public-health agency, Rospotrebnadzor, has said extensive testing found no microorganisms associated with her professional activities and has described her illness as pneumonia of unknown origin. Russian officials have also said investigators found no accident involving pathogenic microorganisms at the institute.

Yet the government response was substantial.

Roughly 200 people who had contact with Shipilova were initially placed under medical observation or quarantine, hospitals faced restrictions, and dozens of institute employees were reportedly confined at the facility while testing was conducted. The authorities reportedly performed nearly 5,000 laboratory tests and found no confirmed plague cases among her contacts.

On October 8, Irkutsk Governor Igor Kobzev announced that preventive measures had been completed. He said authorities found no health problems among the people monitored and maintained that Shipilova had community-acquired pneumonia rather than an occupational laboratory infection.

That may close the case for Russian authorities. It has not closed it internationally.

The World Health Organization says it still does not know the causative agent behind Shipilova’s death and has requested additional information from Moscow. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the agency does not yet have the “full picture” necessary for a complete risk assessment.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has also said it is monitoring reports involving a suspected pneumonic-plague case in the Irkutsk region while U.S. agencies assess new information.

None of that establishes that Shipilova died from plague. Nor does it establish that a laboratory leak occurred.

What it does establish is that important questions remain unanswered outside Russia — including the most basic one.

What killed Darya Shipilova?
