iPhone Duo Buyers Face December Wait After Preorder Rush

Key Takeaways

  • Reported U.S. delivery estimates reached Dec. 15–22 shortly after iPhone Duo preorders opened Oct. 16.
  • Apple continues taking orders, while the first deliveries and retail availability remain scheduled for Oct. 23.
  • The launch-day sellout does not establish a sales record. Apple has not disclosed how many phones were available in its initial allocation.
  • Buyers should check the delivery estimate for their specific order and compare the full terms of any carrier or leasing offer.

CUPERTINO, Calif. — iPhone Duo buyers faced delivery estimates stretching into December Friday, as launch-day availability disappeared shortly after Apple opened preorders for its first foldable phone.

Within 20 minutes of the opening, Apple’s U.S. online store showed Dec. 15–22 delivery estimates across eight color-and-storage combinations, according to MacRumors’ tracking of preorder availability. For customers placing those orders, the wait could extend nearly two months beyond the phone’s Oct. 23 launch.

Apple continues accepting preorders, however. The rapidly changing dates indicate that the initial delivery allocation was exhausted, rather than that customers can no longer buy the device. The company’s U.S. storefront lists models starting at $1,999.

iPhone Duo delivery dates slipped within minutes

Preorders opened at 5 a.m. Pacific, or 7 a.m. Central, Friday. Buyers who completed their purchases early enough secured the first delivery window, but that opportunity narrowed quickly.

In a report published seven minutes after ordering began, AppleInsider described delivery estimates moving into November. The outlet reported dates slipping first to Nov. 16 and then Nov. 23. MacRumors’ subsequent check showed December estimates for the configurations it listed.

Those reports capture different moments in a fast-moving launch. They should not be treated as permanent delivery schedules or a guarantee that every customer will see the same date.

Before Friday’s opening, Apple offered a “Get Ready” checkout process. Customers could save their configuration, arrange a trade-in and prepare payment details before preorders went live. That preparation shortened the final checkout process, although customers still needed to complete their orders.

Orders remain open despite the launch-day sellout

The distinction between unavailable launch-day delivery and an unavailable product is important for anyone still shopping.

Apple’s order page remains active. Customers can choose a model and enter the purchasing process, but a new order may carry a substantially later delivery estimate than one placed during the opening minutes.

Meanwhile, Apple’s announced launch schedule still calls for initial availability Oct. 23. Its September product announcement placed the first release in more than 70 countries and regions, followed by 28 additional markets Oct. 30. The reported U.S. online backorders do not establish that every carrier, retailer or international market has exhausted its allocation.

For buyers, the relevant information is the delivery or pickup estimate attached to their selected configuration. A general release date on a product page does not promise that a newly placed order will arrive that day.

Supply concerns preceded the preorder rush

The rapid backorders follow weeks of reporting about potential production constraints.

On Sept. 15, 9to5Mac reported on a research note from analyst Jeff Pu. Pu lowered his estimate for 2026 iPhone Duo shipments from 7 million to 6 million, citing constraints involving the hinge. That figure was an analyst’s forecast, not an Apple disclosure of available launch inventory.

A later report suggested Apple was seeking more supply. On Oct. 12, 9to5Mac cited China’s Securities Times as reporting a 30% increase in Apple’s supply-chain orders for the device. The report said the resulting supply for the remainder of 2026 would still fall below 10 million units.

These reports concern different measures: an analyst’s shipment forecast and reported manufacturing orders. Neither establishes how many finished phones Apple had ready when preorders opened Friday.

Consequently, the sellout offers an incomplete picture of demand. A limited initial allocation can disappear quickly even without record sales. Manufacturing orders also represent planned supply, rather than phones already delivered to customers.

Friday’s backorders demonstrate that buyers exhausted the available early delivery slots. More information would be needed to determine how the launch compares with previous iPhones.

Prices range from $1,999 to $3,199

The iPhone Duo enters Apple’s lineup at a price well above a routine smartphone upgrade. Its U.S. purchasing page lists four storage options:

Storage U.S. price before tax
256GB $1,999
512GB $2,199
1TB $2,599
2TB $3,199

Each capacity is offered in Night Sky and Star White. Moving from the entry model to the highest storage tier adds $1,200 before taxes, accessories or protection coverage.

Apple also advertises a Klarna-backed leasing option starting at $57.99 monthly for 24 months, excluding taxes and any trade-in credit. At the end of the lease, eligible customers can upgrade, return the device or purchase it through an additional payment. Completing the advertised lease term does not automatically make the customer the owner.

That distinction deserves attention during a hurried checkout. Buyers comparing an outright purchase, installment plan and lease should consider what they will pay in total and whether they will own the phone afterward.

The folding screen is the main attraction

The iPhone Duo’s defining feature is a 7.6-inch inner display that folds closed around a 5.4-inch outer screen. Apple pairs the design with its A20 Pro chip and places Touch ID in the side button.

The larger workspace supports two apps side by side through Split View. Apple also describes software that adapts as the device folds, rotates or switches between its displays. Those features give the phone a different appeal from a conventional upgrade built mainly around camera and processor improvements.

For someone who frequently reads documents, writes messages or moves information between apps, that additional space could be useful. Its value will depend on how often the owner actually opens the phone and uses the larger display.

The preorder rush cannot answer questions about long-term durability, everyday convenience or whether those benefits justify the premium. Those judgments require experience with the device beyond launch-day demand.

What buyers should check before ordering

Anyone still considering an iPhone Duo should confirm the delivery estimate before submitting payment and save the resulting order confirmation. Buyers pursuing pickup should separately verify that a specific store and appointment are available.

Carrier offers also deserve a careful reading. Apple advertises discounts tied to eligible trade-ins and service arrangements, but the amount and conditions vary. A headline savings figure does not show the entire cost of the required plan or the consequences of ending it early.

Customers should also avoid choosing a more expensive configuration solely because another buyer reported an earlier date. Availability can change, and the relevant estimate is the one attached to the actual order.

For now, the immediate consequence of Friday’s rush is a longer wait. Apple’s foldable iPhone is still available to order, but buyers who missed its first delivery allocation may not receive it until well into the holiday shopping season.

Delivery estimates reflect reporting from Friday morning, Oct. 16, and may change.
