President Donald Trump’s personal lawyer, John Dowd resigns on Thursday. Dowd is the lead lawyer against Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russia’s meddling in the election and possible collusion with the Trump campaign.

Dowd’s resignation came as Pres. Trump is becoming increasingly frustrated with Mueller’s intensifying scrutiny. For the first time last week, the President attacked the Mueller probe and its team of investigators. He said it “should have never been started” because it’s a “witch hunt” and there was “no collusion.” He also stated that the Mueller team have 13 hardened Democrats and zero Republicans.

Additionally, the President hired another prominent lawyer, Joseph diGenova to join his legal team. diGenova is very critical of the Mueller investigation, the DOJ and the FBI.  He frequently voices out his criticisms on Fox News.

In a statement regarding his resignation, Dowd said, “I love the President and I wish him well.”

On the other hand, another Trump lawyer, John Sekulow commented that Dowd "has been a valuable member" of Trump's legal team. Sekulow considers him a friend.

In addition, Sekulow said they continue to represent the President and cooperate with the Office of the Special Counsel.

Trump legal team could change defense strategy 

Legal experts suggested that the hiring of diGenova is a sign that Trump’s legal team could change strategy. They might move from their current cooperative approach to a more confrontational tactic.

Dowd and Ty Cobb, another Trump lawyer have been influential in encouraging the President to avoid personal attacks on Mueller, according to Bloomberg citing sources familiar with the situation.

Patrick Cotter, a former U.S. prosecutor, told Bloomberg that the President’s move suggests that he is “flailing around trying to find some lawyer who has a magic recipe to win a war.”

Cotter added,  “When you bring in a new general, the new general always has his own plan to win the war.” Furthermore, he believes that the abrupt change in the President’s legal team could slow down his defense.
