Fairy circles viewed through AI

The initial phase of the study involved training the neural network by inputting over 15,000 satellite images captured in Namibia and Australia. Half of these images showcased fairy circles, while the other half did not.

Subsequently, the AI was fed a dataset comprising satellite views of nearly 575,000 plots of land worldwide, each measuring around 2.5 acres (1 hectare). The neural network meticulously examined vegetation patterns within these images and pinpointed repeating circular formations.

However, the process was not entirely automated. Guirado explained, “We had to manually discard some artificial and natural structures that were not fairy circles based on photo-interpretation and the context of the area.”

The outcome of this extensive analysis revealed 263 dryland locations where the circular patterns were observed in Namibia and Australia. These arid anomalies were distributed across various regions, including Africa’s Sahel, Western Sahara, and the Horn of Africa, as well as Madagascar, Midwestern Asia, and central and Southwest Australia.
