Soft Lunar Landing

The unsuccessful Peregrine mission would have marked the first American moon landing in half a century and the first-ever achievement by a private venture.

Instead, the next contender for a lunar landing is Japan-based JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency). JAXA is set to attempt a landing at the near-equatorial impact crater named Shioli, with the event scheduled for 15:20 GMT on Friday.

Historically, controlled lunar landings have been achieved only by government agencies from the U.S., the Soviet Union, China, and India.
