Fort Stewart Shooting: Army Sergeant Sent Chilling Text Before Allegedly Wounding Five Soldiers

Details of the Incident

Brig. Gen. John Lubas, commanding officer of Fort Stewart and the 3rd Infantry Division, confirmed that Radford carried out the shooting at his workplace. He is currently being held at the Naval Consolidated Brig Charleston in South Carolina pending trial. The military justice system does not use cash bail but considers whether a defendant is a flight risk or a danger to others before determining pretrial confinement.

At an August 7 ceremony honoring soldiers who intervened during the shooting, Army officials declined to comment on Radford’s motive. The Army Criminal Investigation Division did not respond to requests for comment.

Possible Motive and Personal Struggles

The domestic violence charge may indicate how prosecutors plan to frame the alleged motive. Radford’s father, Eddie Radford, told The New York Times that his son had complained about racism at his unit and had sought a transfer. The sergeant also faced an August 20 court date in Liberty County, Georgia, related to a DUI arrest in May.
