The FBI is investigating what it described as an "attempted assassination" of former President Donald Trump.
A man armed with an AK-47 was involved in a shooting near Trump International Golf Course in West Palm Beach, Florida, on Sunday. The incident occurred while Trump was at the club.

Gunfire Sounds at the Golf Course
According to sources familiar with the matter, the shooting happened close to the golf course, and Secret Service agents responded by firing at the suspect. Trump later told ABC News that he was near the 5th hole when he heard "popping sounds" — what appeared to be gunfire nearby. However, it remains unclear if the suspect directly targeted Trump with his weapon.
A senior law enforcement source revealed that the suspect had what was described as an "assault-style rifle." The Secret Service responded to the threat, firing at the man. The suspect's weapon was recovered.
Following the incident, Trump was promptly escorted away by Secret Service agents. According to the source, Trump was in "good spirits" after the evacuation. A spokesperson for Trump's campaign confirmed that the former president is "safe," and law enforcement later announced that a suspect was taken into custody.
Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw provided further details, noting that the gunman was 300 to 500 yards away from Trump when first spotted. Secret Service agents returned fire, leading the suspect to drop his weapon and flee the scene. Witnesses provided authorities with a description and the plate number of the suspect's vehicle, which led to his eventual apprehension.
Investigation of Attempted Assassination
The investigation into the attempted assassination quickly gained momentum. Sheriff Will Snyder of Martin County explained that his units detained a man matching the suspect’s description after authorities issued a "Be on the lookout" alert.
The suspect’s vehicle was spotted on Interstate 95 and was forced to a stop by law enforcement officers without incident. While the suspect is in custody, Snyder emphasized that investigators still need to confirm his involvement in the shooting.
The Secret Service, working closely with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, released a statement affirming that they are investigating "a protective incident involving former President Donald Trump that occurred shortly before 2 p.m. [ET]." The agency reassured the public that Trump was unharmed during the incident.
