Brookfield Asset Management has fired a thunderous shot in the global AI infrastructure race, announcing Wednesday a jaw-dropping $10 billion (95 billion SEK) investment in a new Swedish data center—a move set to redefine Europe’s digital frontier and position Sweden as a rising sovereign compute superpower.

The announcement, made via a company statement, revealed plans for a state-of-the-art AI-driven facility in Strängnäs, marking one of Brookfield’s largest artificial intelligence-related commitments to date on the continent. The project will not only expand Brookfield’s footprint across Scandinavia but also deepen its growing entanglement with Swedish government initiatives, academic institutions, and the private sector.

Building the Backbone of AI Europe

Sikander Rashid, Brookfield’s Head of Europe, called the initiative a strategic thrust into the heart of AI advancement. “To compete in the development of AI and realize its economic productivity,” Rashid said, “we must invest in more than just data centers—we must build the entire nervous system of AI: chip storage, data transfer, energy. Today is a monumental step in that journey.”

The facility, dubbed the first of its kind in Sweden, is intended to anchor the country’s national AI strategy, providing foundational infrastructure to accelerate research, development, and real-world deployment. Brookfield’s plan includes a land allocation agreement for a staggering 350,000 square meters, giving the facility room to grow from 300 to 750 megawatts in capacity—a scale rarely seen in Europe.
