hoax disappearance

Carlee Russell, a 25-year-old woman from Alabama, recently made headlines after she claimed to have been kidnapped. The community and police were involved in a dramatic two-day search for Russell. The Hoover Police Department announced Monday that the entire ordeal was a hoax disappearance.

In a press conference held on Friday, Hoover Police Department Chief Nicholas Derzis disclosed that Carly Russell had been arrested and charged with two misdemeanors for making false statements to the police.

The charges brought against Russell include false reporting to law enforcement authorities and falsely reporting an incident, both of which are class A misdemeanors in Alabama and carry a potential punishment of up to one year in prison.

Hoax disappearance

This bizarre incident began on July 12 when Russell called 911 to report a toddler walking along Interstate 459 in Alabama.

Her car was found abandoned.  Investigators reviewing the highway surveillance video could not find any evidence of a child on the roadside.

She later claimed that she had been taken by a male and a female after stopping to check on the toddler. These contradictory statements raised suspicions and led the police to investigate further.

On July 15, Russell returned home unharmed to her family. And was checked out by a local hospital. The circumstances left authorities baffled and the public bewildered.

Derzis expressed his concerns about the impact of this hoax, stating that it reopened wounds for families whose loved ones have been actual victims of kidnappings.

The frustration surrounding the case intensified when it was revealed that Russell was only facing misdemeanor charges. Derzis and other officials called for an "enhancement" to the law to address cases like this more adequately.

The charges brought against Russell include false reporting to law enforcement authorities and falsely reporting an incident, both of which are class A misdemeanors in Alabama and carry a potential punishment of up to one year in prison.

The Circuit Clerk of Jefferson County, Bessemer Division's office, is responsible for filing the charges as advised by the prosecutors.

Lane Tolbert, the chief assistant district attorney at the Jefferson County District Attorney's Bessemer Division office, disclosed that they had collaborated with the police to determine charges for Russell.

Tolbert explained that both charges were appropriate under the current laws, given the nature of Russell's false statements.

Carlee’s confession

In a statement provided by her attorney, Emory Anthony, Russell publicly confessed to fabricating the entire kidnapping story.

Derzis told reporters during a press conference on Monday that Carlee acknowledged that there was no kidnapping, no baby on the side of the road and that she had not left the Hoover area during her supposed disappearance. According to the statement, she acted alone.

"My client has given me permission to make the following statement on her behalf. There was no kidnapping on Thursday, July 13th 2023. My client did not see a baby on the side of the road. My client did not leave the Hoover area when she was identified as a missing person. My client did not have any help in this incident. This was a single act done by herself," the statement as read by Derzis said.

"We ask for your prayers for Carlee as she addresses her issues and attempts to move forward. Understanding that she made a mistake in this matter, Carly again, asks for your forgiveness and prayers," the statement added.
