Singer and actress Kristin Chenoweth is speaking out after her Instagram comment about the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk sparked controversy among fans and the LGBTQ+ community. The Tony Award–winning performer described her reaction as a “human moment” but acknowledged the backlash it created.
Chenoweth’s Viral Comment
After the Sept. 10 assassination of Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA, Chenoweth commented on Instagram:
“I’m. So. Upset. Didn’t always agree but appreciated some perspectives. What a heartbreak. His young family. I know where he is now. Heaven. But still.”
The remark quickly went viral and drew sharp criticism from some of her fan base, particularly among LGBTQ+ supporters, who pointed out Kirk’s opposition to same-sex marriage and transgender rights.
Responding to Criticism
In an interview with Spectrum News/NY1, Chenoweth addressed the controversy. Theater correspondent Frank DiLella noted her comment received “mixed reactions,” to which Chenoweth replied, “Mixed? You’re being kind.”
