As more tenants continue to face exploitation in both California and New Mexico, it’s clear that the problem is systemic and extends far beyond individual cases. Reforms are necessary to hold landlords accountable, especially those participating in federally subsidized housing programs. Only through stricter regulations and oversight will tenants truly be safe from abuse.

The Department of Justice’s Sexual Harassment in Housing Initiative, launched in 2017, continues to focus on these abuses. The initiative has already led to several settlements, but as the recent settlement in New Mexico proves, the fight against exploitation in housing is far from over.
