Trump praised Macron’s efforts in restoring the iconic Notre Dame Cathedral, which was nearly destroyed in a devastating 2019 fire.

“Macron has done a wonderful job ensuring that Notre Dame has been restored to its full level of glory, and even more so. It will be a very special day for all!”

Macron reciprocated with full diplomatic honors, including a Republican Guard ceremony and trumpets, underscoring France’s recognition of Trump’s role as a pivotal figure on the global stage, even before his official return to office in January 2025.

The visit also addressed pressing international concerns, particularly the war in Ukraine. Macron, Zelenskyy, and Trump held a 35-minute trilateral meeting to discuss ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East.

Macron’s office noted that the talks were arranged at Macron’s suggestion shortly before Trump’s arrival.

Zelenskyy’s top aide, Andriy Yermak, had earlier met with members of Trump’s incoming administration, reflecting Ukraine's concern and uncertainty about the future U.S. stance.

Trump has promised to end the war in Ukraine swiftly but has not disclosed specifics, raising concerns in Kyiv about potential negotiation terms.

Macron and other European leaders aim to persuade Trump to maintain robust support for Ukraine.

A Day of Diplomacy and Celebration

The day was marked by a blend of high diplomacy and historic celebration.

Accompanying Trump was a team of key advisers, including incoming Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, real estate investor Steve Witkoff, and Middle East adviser Massad Boulos.

Trump also met with Britain’s Prince William at the British ambassador’s residence, where the two exchanged cordial remarks.

Prince William was also scheduled to meet with First Lady Jill Biden, who represented the United States at the Notre Dame ceremony in place of President Joe Biden, citing a scheduling conflict.

Elon Musk, the billionaire CEO of Tesla and X and a prominent supporter of Trump’s campaign, also attended the Notre Dame event.

Reflecting on the day, Macron posted on X: “United States, Ukraine, and France. Together on this historic day. United for Notre-Dame. Let’s continue to work together for peace and security.”

The visit underscored the interconnectedness of historic symbolism and urgent global challenges.

While Trump’s election victory has raised questions about future U.S. aid to Ukraine, the Biden administration announced an additional $988 million in military assistance on Saturday. This brings the total U.S. support to over $62 billion since Russia's invasion in 2022.
