A legendary Forensic Scientist whose testimony influenced some of America's highest-profile criminal cases reportedly gave a candid final interview before his death in an effort to defend his legacy.

Dr. Henry C. Lee, whose work helped shape thousands of investigations including O.J. Simpson, JonBenét Ramsey and Phil Spector, died Friday at the age of 87. His career spanned more than five decades.

His death comes as his professional reputation remained under scrutiny following allegations that some of his forensic conclusions contributed to wrongful convictions.

According to individuals familiar with an upcoming documentary, Lee used one of his final interviews to explain and defend decisions he made during his decades as one of the world's best-known forensic experts.

Forensic science has developed quickly. And for the last 20 years the forensic evidence is included in every court case.

Forensic Scientist Henry Lee Became a Household Name

Born in China before immigrating to the United States, Henry Lee built an international reputation as one of the nation's leading forensic scientists.

After serving with the Connecticut State Police, he became director of the Connecticut State Forensic Laboratory and later founded the Henry C. Lee Institute of Forensic Science.

Throughout his career, Lee said he participated in more than 8,000 criminal investigations across dozens of countries. His expertise included bloodstain pattern analysis, crime scene reconstruction, DNA evidence evaluation, trace evidence analysis and homicide investigations.

His work brought him into many of the country's most closely watched criminal cases, making him a frequent television commentator and expert witness in courtrooms across the United States.

What Does a Forensic Scientist Do?

Forensic scientists play a critical role in modern criminal investigations by examining physical evidence collected from crime scenes.

Their responsibilities often include analyzing bloodstains, fingerprints, DNA, firearms evidence, fibers, hair, footprints, digital evidence, and biological samples. They also reconstruct crime scenes to help investigators determine how events unfolded.

In many criminal prosecutions, forensic evidence becomes the most important piece of evidence presented to juries. Expert witnesses frequently testify in court, explaining complex scientific findings in language jurors can understand.

Their opinions can significantly influence whether prosecutors obtain convictions or whether defense attorneys raise reasonable doubt.

Because juries often place substantial weight on scientific testimony, forensic experts are expected to follow strict laboratory procedures, accurately document evidence and clearly distinguish scientific conclusions from personal opinions.

High-Profile Cases Brought National Attention to Forensic Scientist

Lee became widely known during the 1995 O.J. Simpson murder trial, where he testified for the defense.

Lee stated that he had identified previously overlooked bloody footprints at the crime scene and questioned aspects of the evidence collection process. Prosecutors disputed those conclusions, and an FBI analyst testified that some of the markings were consistent with impressions left by construction workers rather than the killer.

Simpson was ultimately acquitted of the criminal charges, although he was later found liable in a civil wrongful death lawsuit.

Lee also participated in the investigation into the 1996 murder of six-year-old JonBenét Ramsey in Boulder, Colorado. He was among the early investigators who suggested the ransom note found inside the Ramsey home may have been staged, a theory that has continued to be debated as the case remains unsolved.

In another nationally televised trial, Lee testified during music producer Phil Spector's murder case involving actress Lana Clarkson. Spector denied murdering Clarkson and maintained she died by suicide. He was later convicted of second-degree murder.

Wrongful Conviction Case From 1985 Raised New Questions

Lee's reputation suffered a significant blow after the convictions of Shawn Henning and Ralph "Ricky" Birch were overturned decades after they had been imprisoned for a 1985 murder.

One piece of evidence presented during the original prosecution involved a towel that Lee testified contained blood. Subsequent testing found no blood on the towel, and investigators later concluded the item had never been scientifically tested in the manner originally described.

The two men were released after spending nearly 30 years in prison.

The case prompted renewed scrutiny of several other investigations in which Lee had testified.

Lee consistently denied intentionally fabricating evidence and defended his decades of work, saying that throughout his long career he had never before faced allegations of professional misconduct.

Final Interview of Renowned Forensic Scientist

According to individuals involved with an upcoming documentary examining Lee's career, the forensic scientist participated in an extensive interview shortly before his death.

Sources familiar with the production said Lee sought to explain his investigative methods and defend his professional reputation amid growing criticism.

Former student Brent Turvey, now a forensic scientist and criminologist, told reporters that Lee once inspired countless investigators through his innovative crime scene work but argued that increasing fame and pressure may ultimately have affected his judgment.

Turvey also recalled advice Lee often shared with students during commencement speeches.

"It takes 25 years to build a good name and 25 seconds to destroy it," Lee frequently said.

Whether remembered as a pioneering forensic expert or a controversial courtroom witness, Henry Lee's influence on modern forensic science—and on some of America's most famous criminal cases—will likely remain the subject of debate for years to come.
