A former aide to New York Gov. Kathy Hochul and ex-Gov. Andrew Cuomo was arrested Tuesday on charges of secretly acting as an agent for the Chinese government in a sprawling political conspiracy aimed at advancing the interests of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). The aide, Linda Sun, is accused of violating the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA), along with visa fraud, alien smuggling, and money laundering conspiracy.

Linda Sun, who previously served as Hochul’s deputy chief of staff, is accused of covertly promoting Chinese government interests in New York, including blocking Taiwanese officials from meeting with high-level state officials, manipulating state messaging on issues important to China, and arranging meetings between Chinese representatives and New York state officials. Prosecutors allege that Sun concealed her actions from both the state government and the public, in violation of internal rules within the governor’s office.
