Since the Covid-19 pandemic outbreak, few people have bought cars. For instance, the cars purchases declined dramatically in 2020, as the requests plunged, and manufacturing halted. However, the case is a bit different for Toyota.

In the United States, car drivers have been buying Ford F-series trucks more than any other type of car. Meanwhile, people in Argentina and Australia went for Toyota pickups, while Swiss drivers chose to go for mid-sized sedans such as the Czech brand Skoda. This is according to data from BestSellingCarsBlog.com, which analyzed the car buying behavior of clients across many countries in the last year. 

In 2020, Toyota marked its place as the most sold auto brand in global sales. The company took over the German monster Volkswagen which took the title of the world’s best-selling car brand. The Japanese giant Toyota sold over 9.5 million vehicles in 2020 alone. However, the figure is 11.3% lower than 2019, while Volkswagen’s decline had hit the 15% mark to 9.3 million cars sold in 2020 compared to the year before. 

On a global level, Toyota had sold the most cars in 44 different countries around the world. According to data from BestSellingCarsBlog.com, Volkswagen was the second making the first place in 14 countries.

Toyota’s Corolla sedan had been sold 1.1 million times in 2020. Meanwhile, the Rav4 compact SUV model was sold 995,000 times marking the world’s top two-best selling individual cars in 2020.  

On the other hand, Toyota Hilux, the mid-sized pickup truck sold in numerous markets around the world. was 2020′s best-selling vehicle in 14 countries, including Argentina, Australia, Panama, South Africa, and Fiji. Nonetheless, the Hilux hasn’t been available in the United States since the ’90s after Toyota brought to the market the Tacoma pickup.

Surprisingly, the Skoda Octavia had also become one of the world’s most popular cars. The Mladá Boleslav, Czech Republic-based Skoda auto car is a subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group and is sold in Europe with a starting price of $25,000. The car became the best-selling car in six countries in 2020 including Austria, the Czech Republic, and Switzerland.
