George Santos has sentencing delayed

A Brooklyn federal judge granted former U.S. Rep. George Santos a two-month delay in sentencing, giving him additional time to earn money through his weekly podcast, “Pants On Fire,” to help pay the $580,000 he owes in restitution and forfeiture. U.S. District Judge Joanna Seybert approved the adjournment on Wednesday, moving the sentencing date from Feb. 7 to April 25.

Judge Seybert emphasized that this delay is a “one-time courtesy” and warned that further extensions would be considered only under extraordinary circumstances. Santos, who pled guilty to fraud and aggravated identity theft, faces significant financial penalties tied to his plea agreement.

Sentencing Delay Sparks Mixed Reactions

The Brooklyn U.S. Attorney’s Office declined to comment on the adjournment. Prosecutors had opposed Santos’ request to delay sentencing until August, arguing that further postponements could undermine the justice process. Santos’ legal team did not immediately respond to inquiries.

Santos claimed the additional time would allow him to generate income from his podcast, where he discusses political scandals and personal reflections, to meet the $374,000 restitution and $205,000 forfeiture obligations outlined in his plea deal.

Background on Charges and Conviction

The former New York congressman, expelled from the House of Representatives in December 2023, admitted to inflating campaign fundraising numbers to mislead the Federal Election Commission during the 2022 election cycle. His false claims, combined with a reputation for fabricating aspects of his background, drew widespread criticism and eventually led to his legal downfall.
