Gig Tripping the Trend

From the legendary Grateful Dead to contemporary icons like Taylor Swift, this trend represents a fusion of travel and music experiences, creating memorable adventures for devoted fans.

In 2023, Taylor Swift's Eras Tour caused a frenzy among her dedicated fan base, known as the "Swifties." Despite hours-long queues and overwhelming demand, securing tickets for her U.S. tour dates proved to be a daunting task.

The unprecedented fervor even led to Ticketmaster's inability to accommodate the massive influx of eager fans during the presale, citing both overwhelming demand and bot attacks as contributing factors.

As Swift embarked on the international leg of her tour, a new trend emerged among her followers – gig tripping. This trend involves fans integrating travel plans with concert attendance, showcasing their unwavering dedication to their favorite artists.

The Deadheads

The roots of gig tripping trace back to the 1970s with the emergence of the Grateful Dead's devoted followers, known as Deadheads.

These enthusiasts traveled extensively to attend as many of the band's shows and festival performances as possible.

They morphed into a dedicated vibrant community centered around the band’s live music experiences.

The culture surrounding Deadheads often included higher instances of drug use compared to contemporary gig trippers.

By the numbers

According to data from Skyscanner, a significant portion of Americans, particularly younger demographics, express willingness to travel for music events.

While many plan to attend local concerts, a substantial portion is open to traveling abroad for gigs, citing cost-saving opportunities and unique experiences as driving factors.

The rise of gig tripping has not gone unnoticed by travel industry professionals.

Tim Elrod, vice president and travel adviser for Travelmation, recounts booking a European trip for a family attending Taylor Swift's Eras Tour after failing to secure tickets in the U.S.

The profound influence of artists like Swift in shaping travel itineraries and supporting local economies worldwide.

Travel Planning

Adam Duckworth, president and founder of Travelmation, emphasizes the transformative impact of gig tripping on travel preferences. He notes that fans are increasingly willing to travel long distances to experience Swift's electrifying live performances.

Taylor Swift remains the most prominent music icon driving the current gig tripping trend. But other artists, such as the Jonas Brothers, Madonna, Olivia Rodrigo, and Nicki Minaj, are also attracting globetrotting fans with their world tours.

As the gig tripping phenomenon continues to gain momentum, it underscores the profound connection between music, travel, and cultural experiences, reshaping the landscape of both industries and enriching the lives of passionate fans worldwide.
