X has announced that its Grok-2 AI chatbot is now free, allowing users to explore its capabilities without a paywall. This move aims to attract new users and rekindle interest in the platform amid growing competition.

What is Grok-2 AI Chatbot?

Grok-2 is a next-generation AI model developed by xAI. It excels in tasks like conversation, coding, and reasoning while integrating real-time information from X. 

Available through the X app and enterprise API, Grok-2 has been in beta since its release in August. The chatbot was built into and trained on content from X.

It is a significant upgrade over its predecessor. And is standing tall alongside leading chatbot tools like ChatGPT, Claude, and Google Gemini.

What’s the Catch?

For free-tier users, access to Grok-2 comes with some limitations. Non-paying users can send only ten messages every two hours and perform up to three image analysis requests daily. These restrictions might be a way to entice users toward X Premium, which starts at $8 per month.

While Grok-2 boasts impressive features, it’s not without flaws. Users are cautioned to verify its outputs, as the chatbot has been prone to inaccuracies.

Earlier this year, Grok-2 faced criticism for generating false election information and controversial images, such as depictions of public figures in inappropriate scenarios. These missteps have sparked debates about the ethical use of AI.

Why Now?

The decision to make Grok-2 free likely stems from X's efforts to regain user engagement and compete with other platforms offering free AI chatbots, such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google Gemini. 

Reports suggest that xAI, which recently raised $6 billion in funding, may also be planning a standalone Grok app to strengthen its position in the market.
