Deportation Dispute Intensifies

Immigration officials announced plans to deport Kilmar Abrego Garcia to Uganda, following his refusal of a plea offer that would have sent him to Costa Rica in exchange for staying in jail and pleading guilty to human smuggling charges.

According to a Saturday court filing, Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran national, was released from a Tennessee jail on Friday and returned to Maryland to await trial with his family. Hours later, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) notified his attorneys that he must report to immigration authorities in Baltimore and prepare for deportation to Uganda.

Court documents revealed that Costa Rica had offered to accept Abrego Garcia as a legal immigrant without detention. A letter from the Costa Rican government assured that he would not face imprisonment and emphasized that Spanish, the nation’s official language, would ease his transition.

However, Abrego Garcia declined the arrangement. His lawyers noted in their filing that he had refused only one part of the deal — remaining in jail — while leaving other terms under consideration.
