To maximize your chances of witnessing the Northern Lights, head to a location far from city lights. Even if the auroras aren’t visible to the naked eye, a smartphone camera might reveal their beauty.

Where to See the Northern Lights

The New Year’s Eve solar storms are expected to extend the visibility of auroras farther south than usual. In the United States, areas as far south as Wyoming, Wisconsin, and New York might catch a glimpse. Across the Atlantic, regions in Scotland, Northern Ireland, and northern England could also experience the mesmerizing displays.

Skywatchers are encouraged to check NOAA’s aurora forecast for updates. NOAA expects to refine its predictions as the CMEs approach within 1 million miles of Earth, approximately 30 to 60 minutes before impact.

To prepare for an aurora-chasing adventure, find a dark, open area with minimal light pollution. Bundle up against the cold and bring blankets and hot beverages. Allow your eyes time to adjust to the darkness, as this can enhance your viewing experience.

The Risks of Solar Flares

While these solar storms promise stunning visuals, they also serve as a reminder of the Sun’s immense power. Solar flares, traveling at the speed of light, have already caused minor radio signal blackouts in recent days. The associated CMEs, which carry clouds of plasma and magnetic fields, can disrupt technology on Earth.
