Pope Leo XIV has stepped onto Algerian soil for the first time in history for a papal visit, opening an ambitious 11-day African tour that blends diplomacy, religion, and geopolitical tension across multiple nations. The landmark arrival in Algiers marks the first time a Catholic pope has ever visited the overwhelmingly Muslim country, setting the stage for a trip packed with symbolic encounters and sensitive historical reflection.

Algiers Arrival: A First in Papal History

The United States-born pontiff arrived in Algeria’s capital, Algiers, at around 09:00 GMT on Monday, according to an AFP news agency journalist traveling aboard the papal plane. His visit comes as part of a broader mission across Africa, a continent where more than a fifth of the world’s Catholics live, according to Vatican statistics.

Later in the day, Pope Leo is expected to pay tribute to victims of Algeria’s war of independence from France between 1954 and 1962, a defining chapter in the country’s modern history that continues to shape national identity.

A Continent-Wide Mission With Global Stakes

The pope’s 11-day tour will take him beyond Algeria to Cameroon, Angola, and Equatorial Guinea, covering 11 cities and towns and nearly 18,000 kilometers across 18 flights. The itinerary reflects both the scale and urgency of his mission, as he seeks to address issues ranging from poverty and governance to religious coexistence.

"build bridges between the Christian and Muslim worlds"

The trip is aimed at continuing to “build bridges between the Christian and Muslim worlds”, the archbishop of Algiers, Jean-Paul Vesco, told AFP.

Algeria’s significance in the journey is heightened by its religious demographics. Despite being an overwhelmingly Muslim nation of roughly 48 million people, it is home to fewer than 10,000 Catholics. This visit marks the first time the country has hosted a Catholic pope.

Faith, Memory, and Political Tension

Monday’s program includes visits to two of Algiers’ most symbolic religious landmarks: the Great Mosque of Algiers, home to the world’s tallest minaret, and the Basilica of Our Lady of Africa overlooking the Bay of Algiers.

Pope Leo also plans a private prayer in a chapel dedicated to 19 priests and nuns killed during Algeria’s 1992 to 2002 civil war, a decade of violence that still casts a long shadow. However, he will not visit the Tibhirine monastery, where monks were kidnapped and murdered in 1996 in an unresolved case that continues to haunt the country.

The Vatican has indicated that issues of corruption, governance, and leadership in often authoritarian regimes will feature prominently throughout the trip. Both Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea have long-standing leaders who have faced accusations of human rights abuses, which they deny.

Massive Crowds Expected in Cameroon

One of the most significant moments of the tour is expected on Friday in Cameroon, where Vatican officials estimate around 600,000 people may attend a mass in the coastal city of Douala. The scale of the event underscores the growing influence of Catholicism across parts of Africa.

Africa as a whole contributed more than half of the 15.8 million new Catholics baptized in 2023, including 8.3 million new African Catholics, according to Vatican statistics. The continent also produces thousands of priests and religious sisters annually, shifting its role from a traditional mission field to a global source of clergy.

Angola and Cameroon, in particular, consistently rank among the top producers of seminarians each year.

A Pope on the Global Stage

Since his election last May, Pope Leo has made only one major overseas journey before this tour, visiting Turkiye and Lebanon in November and December, followed by a trip to Monaco in March.

Comfortable in multiple languages, he is expected to address audiences in Italian, English, French, Portuguese, and Spanish throughout the journey, reflecting the global scope of his message and the diverse audiences he aims to reach across the African continent.
