At least 10 people were killed and more than 70 wounded near the United States consulate in Pakistan’s largest city after demonstrations erupted over the reported killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in U.S.-Israeli attacks.
The violence unfolded before dawn Sunday, transforming a tense protest into a scene of chaos as security forces opened fire to disperse hundreds of pro-Iran demonstrators attempting to storm the diplomatic compound.
Deadly Confrontation on Mai Kolachi Road
Video footage shared online and verified by Al Jazeera showed bystanders carrying away a wounded person as panic rippled through the crowd. Images circulating on social media depicted protesters pressing toward the consulate’s heavily guarded building along Mai Kolachi Road.
Authorities said security personnel fired live rounds as demonstrators tried to breach the compound’s perimeter. The confrontation left at least 10 dead and scores injured, according to local officials.
The unrest did not remain confined to Karachi.
