Man charges at Rep. Ilhan Omar and sprays her with substance at town hall

U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar was attacked Tuesday evening when a man rushed toward her and sprayed an unknown liquid during a town hall meeting in Minneapolis, prompting a swift response from security and law enforcement.

According to the Minneapolis Police Department, the suspect was identified as 55-year-old Anthony Kazmierczak. He was immediately restrained by security officers and taken into custody. Authorities later confirmed that he was booked into Hennepin County Jail on a charge of third-degree assault. Police said Omar was not physically injured and did not require hospitalization.

The incident unfolded while the Minnesota Democrat was addressing constituents and discussing immigration policy and national security leadership. Witnesses reported that the man, who had been seated in the front row, suddenly stood up, moved toward the stage and sprayed Omar with a liquid using what officers described as a syringe-like device. The room was briefly thrown into confusion as security intervened and escorted the suspect out in handcuffs.

Staff members urged Omar to leave the venue to be medically evaluated, but she chose to remain and continue the event. Speaking to the audience, she said she would not be intimidated and went on to answer questions for nearly half an hour.

The U.S. Capitol Police said in a statement that the attack on a sitting member of Congress was being taken seriously and that federal investigators are working alongside local authorities to determine whether additional charges may be filed.

Omar later posted on social media that she was safe and thanked supporters for their messages, saying the incident would not deter her from carrying out her duties.

The attack comes at a time of heightened tension in Minneapolis following days of protests linked to immigration enforcement operations and the recent fatal shooting of a civilian by federal agents. Omar has been a vocal critic of the expanded federal presence in the Twin Cities and has repeatedly raised concerns about civil liberties and community safety.

The episode also follows another recent confrontation involving a Democratic lawmaker, adding to growing concern over the security of elected officials. Capitol Police statistics show a steady rise in threats and hostile incidents targeting members of Congress, their families and staff over the past three years.

Omar, who has previously spoken publicly about receiving death threats, has often highlighted the risks faced by public officials, particularly women and minorities in politics. Tuesday’s incident is likely to intensify calls for stronger protective measures at public events and town halls across the country.
