Gavin McKenna charged with assault

Pennsylvania authorities have charged Canadian ice hockey phenom Gavin McKenna, a Penn State forward and projected top pick in the 2026 NHL Draft, with felony assault and harassment.

The 18-year-old was arraigned Wednesday in State College, Pennsylvania, where he is a student-athlete for Penn State University. Court documents obtained by the BBC list charges of felony aggravated assault, misdemeanor simple assault, and two summary counts of harassment and disorderly conduct related to a physical altercation.

Alleged Incident and Legal Consequences

Authorities allege that on January 31, McKenna punched a 21-year-old man in the face, resulting in injuries requiring corrective surgery. McKenna posted $20,000 bail and is not being held in custody. If convicted, he could face several years in prison and substantial fines.

Penn State Athletics issued a brief statement acknowledging awareness of the charges but declined further comment on the ongoing legal matter.

Career on the Line

The alleged assault occurred on the same day Penn State’s hockey team, the Nittany Lions, fell 5-4 to Michigan State, with McKenna scoring one of Penn State’s goals. This season, he has been a top performer, drawing attention as a leading prospect for the 2026 NHL Draft in Buffalo, New York.

Just last month, McKenna helped Canada secure a bronze medal at the World Junior Championships, cementing his status as one of hockey’s rising stars.
