The newly established Department of Government Efficiency aka DOGE, spearheaded by Tesla CEO Elon Musk and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, is tasked with cutting $2 trillion from the federal budget. 

Created under President-elect Donald Trump’s administration, DOGE is already gaining attention for its ambitious goals and high-profile supporters.

DOGE’s official account on X, formerly known as Twitter, recently invited interested individuals to apply for roles within the department. Key figures like Marc Andreessen and Travis Kalanick have reportedly contributed to its planning. 

Several current and former lawmakers are also supporting the effort. Now, former U.S. Congressman Ron Paul has entered the conversation with a controversial proposal.

Ron Paul: Eliminate Foreign Aid

Paul has called on DOGE to eliminate foreign aid, describing it as an “immoral transfer of wealth.” In a post on X, he criticized the practice of reallocating funds from U.S. citizens to affluent individuals in foreign nations.

Paul has long complained that foreign aid often does not reach those it is intended for. He says that in many cases it is given by the US to buy political favors and does not reach those in need. 

“Americans don't want their government to borrow more money to spend on foreign aid,” Paul asserted. He argued that foreign aid diverts resources from the U.S. middle and lower classes to wealthy entities abroad, with intermediaries profiting along the way. 

Paul deemed the practice not only economically harmful but also morally questionable and unconstitutional.

Paul also said that “Foreign aid is taking money from the poor people of a rich country and giving it to the rich people of a poor country.”

Budget Challenges for DOGE

While DOGE aims for massive federal budget cuts, Biden administration experts predict an annual savings of only $50–100 billion will far short of the department’s $2 trillion target. 

Meanwhile, the federal deficit is projected to reach $1.7 trillion in 2024, further amplifying fiscal concerns.

Musk has expressed interest in involving Paul in DOGE’s efforts, citing his fiscal expertise. As debates continue over U.S. spending priorities, Paul’s call to eliminate foreign aid adds another dimension to the discussion on federal efficiency and resource allocation.
