Meanwhile, Russia’s Defense Ministry downplayed the incidents, attributing them to “Ukrainian terrorist groups.” Russia’s defense ministry claims it “thwarted” an armed incursion by Ukrainian armed forces into its western border regions of Kursk and Belgorod.

Either way it is an embarrassment to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s image of control and stability.

This military action comes just days before Russian citizens are set to cast their votes in the presidential election. 

Despite widespread expectations of a landslide victory for Putin, recent polls indicate a decline in support for his administration, particularly concerning the war in Ukraine.

There is no doubt that Putin will be re-elected. Western analysts have long accused Russia of rigging its elections.
