Defense Arguments Fall Short in Bail Hearing

Despite the partial acquittals, Judge Arun Subramanian denied Combs bail, citing the defendant’s history of violence and past illegal conduct. The judge’s decision came after referencing the violence that was “starkly depicted” in 2016 hotel security footage that showed him physically assaulting his then-girlfriend, Cassie Ventura.

“This is his first conviction, and it’s a prostitution offence, and so he should be released on appropriate conditions,” defense attorney Marc Agnifilo argued. However, the judge remained unmoved by these arguments, determining that the nature of Combs’ conduct and his history warranted continued detention.

Recent Bail Motion Renews Legal Fight

The legal battle over Combs’ detention status intensified recently when his attorneys filed a new motion requesting his release from federal prison on bond, claiming he “is not a risk of flight nor is he a danger to the community or to any specific people”. The motion, filed less than a month after his conviction, represents a renewed effort to secure his freedom before the October sentencing date.

Combs’s lawyers initially requested bail of $1 million and proposed that if released, he would surrender his passport and limit his travel to his residences and court appearances. However, prosecutors continue to oppose any release, maintaining their position that Combs should remain detained until sentencing.

The conviction stems from two counts of Mann Act violations for transporting male escorts and former girlfriends Ventura and “Jane” for sex. These charges, while significantly less severe than the original indictment’s most serious counts, still carry substantial legal consequences.

With Combs being guilty on transportation charges, assets like his private jet — if used to transport sex workers or clients — could be seized, according to legal experts. The conviction also poses challenges for any future entertainment industry ventures should he eventually be released.
