As millions prepare to enjoy fried foods, concerts, and the iconic Big Tex, the State Fair of Texas is also facing mounting legal, safety, and community challenges. The 2024 fair, running from September 26 through October 19 at Fair Park in Dallas, arrives under the shadow of debates over firearms, immigration enforcement, and new security protocols.

In line with safety upgrades, the State Fair of Texas has introduced a clear bag policy. Visitors must use transparent bags to expedite security screenings, though medical bags, parenting bags, and soft-shell coolers will still be allowed after inspection.

Weapons Ban Sparks Legal Battle

In October 2023, three people were injured after Cameron Turner opened fire at the fairgrounds. Turner later pleaded guilty to unlawful carrying of a weapon in a prohibited place and was sentenced to 12 years in prison.

In response, the State Fair of Texas updated its weapons policy in August 2024, banning firearms, knives (with small pocketknives as an exception), clubs, explosive devices, and other weapons.
