Supreme Court Refuses to Hear Alex Jones’ $1.4B Sandy Hook Appeal

The Origins of the Defamation Case

The case stems from Jones’ repeated false claims that the 2012 Sandy Hook school shooting was a hoax, asserting that the tragedy — which left 20 children and six adults dead — was “staged” by crisis actors as part of a government plot to promote gun control.

Families of the victims said Jones’ remarks terrorized them for years, leading to harassment, death threats, and public humiliation from his followers. They sued him for defamation and emotional distress, arguing that his broadcasts amplified lies that their children had never died.

“These families were thrust into the national spotlight only to be retraumatized by a web of conspiracy and cruelty,” the plaintiffs’ lawyers said after the Supreme Court’s denial.

Legal Odyssey and Financial Fallout

Jones’ legal battles have spiraled since 2022, when he and his companies filed multiple bankruptcy cases following the defamation verdicts in Connecticut and Texas. In Texas, a separate jury awarded $45.1 million to another group of Sandy Hook families.

Last summer, a Texas bankruptcy judge dismissed Free Speech Systems’ Chapter 11 case and converted Jones’ personal bankruptcy to Chapter 7 liquidation, citing years of stalled progress. In September, a state judge appointed a receiver to take control of InfoWars’ assets in preparation for their potential sale to help satisfy the enormous debts.
