President Donald Trump has ordered the repositioning of two nuclear submarines in response to what he called “highly provocative statements” by Dmitry Medvedev, the deputy chair of Russia’s Security Council and former president of Russia.

The move underscores rising tensions between the U.S. and Russia as the war in Ukraine rages on.

Trump Responds to Medvedev’s Threat

Trump made the announcement via his social media platform, writing, “Based on the highly provocative statements of the Former President of Russia, Dmitry Medvedev… I have ordered two Nuclear Submarines to be positioned in the appropriate regions.”

He did not provide details about the submarines’ destination or capabilities but emphasized that the decision was made “just in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that.”

While departing the White House on Friday, Trump added:

“A threat was made… and we’re going to protect our people. We just have to be careful.”
