Finally, Sanders pointed out the duty of the press to report factually:
“The press has the responsibility to put out accurate information.”
As noted by the press secretary, the mainstream media has failed to report accurately on multiple occasions. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was recently listed as “AWOL” when he was, in fact, going to North Korea to ensure the release of three U.S. prisoners. Untrue reports that First Lady Melania Trump does not live in the White House have also surfaced from the press.
The Debate Regarding the Free Press
As previously stated, President Trump’s critics have frequently condemned his ongoing battles with the mainstream media. Americans opposed to the President have also overwhelming opined that he simply labels all negative coverage as “fake.” Some of the harshest critics moreover alleged that Trump’s criticism of the press constitutes as an assault on the First Amendment.
However, not all Americans share this outlook. Like the White House press secretary, Trump supporters have pointed out instances where the media’s unfavorable coverage of the President also turned out to be untrue. Americans who support the Commander-in-Chief overwhelmingly believe the media has earned the frequent backlash.
