Paris-based AI startup Veesion is bringing a new twist to retail security, using gesture recognition algorithms to detect suspicious movements before theft occurs. Instead of relying on facial recognition or physical characteristics, the company’s technology focuses purely on how people move.
“The algorithm doesn’t care about what people look like. It just cares about how your body parts move over time,” said cofounder Benoît Koenig in an interview with Business Insider.
How Veesion Works
Veesion’s system integrates directly with a store’s existing security cameras. It detects people in the frame, analyzes their movements, and identifies objects like merchandise, carts, baskets, or bags. If a gesture signals possible concealment or theft, the AI sends a short video clip to store security, who can then respond in real time.
One U.S. retailer reportedly cut losses in its health and beauty section by 50% in the first three months of using Veesion. Koenig says more than 85% of alerts are marked as relevant by store operators.
