The suspect, whose identity remains undisclosed, was transported to the UVA Medical Center to treat a non-life threatening injury.
Officer Wagner’s department-issued firearm was later recovered from the woods where the confrontation took place.

The Wintergreen community mourns the loss of Officer Wagner, with heartfelt tributes pouring in to remember his service.
A 31-year-old resident of Stuarts Draft, Wagner was an alumnus of Spotswood High School and had joined the Wintergreen Police force in August 2020.
Prior to his time in Wintergreen, he had dedicated seven years of service to the Massanutten Police Department.
His journey from being a gate attendant to graduating from Central Shenandoah Criminal Justice Academy as an officer in May of 2019, spoke of his commitment towards the badge.
Chief of Police Dennis Russell, in his tribute, highlighted Wagner’s love for his job and the midnight shift he willingly took on, painting a picture of an officer ready and willing to serve, at any time.

Chief Russell reminisced about the unique aspects of Officer Wagner’s personality – his preference for dark sunglasses during the day, his infectious laugh echoing throughout the office, and his love for the outdoors and photography.
