Mike Pompeo, the U.S. Secretary of State, met with the President of North Korea Saturday. He reported vague progress during his visit to South Korea Sunday.

Optimism Regarding North Korea Meeting

Pompeo visited North Korea for the fourth time Saturday. He met directly with Kim Jong Un. The two spoke for three and a half hours, including eating lunch together.

Un’s presence at the lunch was a surprise to Pompeo. “It’s a very nice day that promises a good future for both countries,” Kim said as they sat to eat.

“Yeah, so we had a great, great visit this morning,” Pompeo answered. “Thank you for hosting, President Trump sends his regards. And we had a very successful morning so thank you and I am looking forward to our time here at lunch as well.”

From North Korea, Pompeo went to South Korea to meet with President Moon Jae-in.

Before the meeting, however, Pompeo tweeted that he had a “good trip” to North Korea. He wrote that he and Un “continue to make progress on agreements made at Singapore summit.” He also briefed John Bolton and John Kelly. Bolton is the White House national security adviser. Kelly is Trump’s chief of staff.

Pompeo did not say what the progress was. He also did not say whether he was successful in arranging another summit between President Donald Trump and Un.

Afterward, Trump tweeted, “I look forward to seeing Chairman Kim again, in the near future.”

Visit to South Korea

At a press conference in South Korea, President Jae-in asked Pompeo for more information. He said, “I dearly hope that your latest visit, as well as the upcoming U.S.-North Korea summit, which I hope will be happening soon, will make an irreversible, decisive progress in terms of the denuclearization as well as the peace process. Since we have the media present here, I would like to ask you to disclose anything that you can open to the public here.”

Pompeo did not disclose any more information. Instead, he answered, “I will certainly tell you in private about our conversation, but we had a good, productive conversation. As President Trump said, there are many steps along the way and we took one of them today. It was another step forward. So this is, I think, a good outcome for all of us.”

Afterward, Jae-in’s office released a statement saying that Pompeo had confirmed another U.S.-North Korea summit. The time and place, however, were not set.
