The Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft touched down near the moon's south pole on August 23rd. India is the fourth nation to land a spacecraft on the Moon. And the first to land at the lunar South Pole.

It is a milestone for the nation. India is now the fourth country to have a lunar landing, after the U.S., the former Soviet Union, and China.

In a monumental achievement for India's space endeavors, the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) has accomplished a successful soft landing on the moon. And bolstering the nation's position in the global space community.

Anil Bhardwaj, director of the Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) in India, said, "The whole country is excited about this mission." 

"It is going to be a game changer for the new generation." Bhardwaj added that the space mission is important for the country's "strategic and geopolitical purposes."  And it will challenge "the youth to do something different and unique."

The PRL built and tested some of the instrumentation onboard Chandrayaan-3. The PRL team will be busy for the next few days. "Our job starts after landing, Bhardwaj said excitedly.

Chandrayaan-3 successfully lands

At 8:33 a.m. ET, ISRO Chairman Sreedhara Somanath announced that India had landed on the moon. The landing signifies a pivotal moment not only for India but also for humanity as a whole, Prime Minister Narendra Modi remarked. 

India's Prime Minister highlighted the accomplishment as a testament to the potential of all nations, especially those from the global south, to achieve remarkable feats in space exploration.

The triumphant moon landing paved the way for a significant phase of exploration. 

Chandrayaan-3 is equipped with a solar-powered rover named Pragyan, which is poised to embark on a scientific mission to study the moon's composition. The duo, comprised of Vikram (the lander) and Pragyan, is set to explore the lunar surface for approximately 14 Earth days.

During this time, the rover will gather essential data about the moon's makeup before its solar-powered batteries are depleted.

The lunar mission is the culmination of years of dedication and innovation. 

India's previous lunar attempt, Chandrayaan-2, faced setbacks due to a software glitch, resulting in a failed landing. Extensive changes and improvements in the landing strategy were implemented. 

This includes the refinement of onboard algorithms and structural enhancements. These adaptations ensured a smoother descent and increased the mission's chance of success.
