In a dramatic twist of events, Philadelphia-based law firm Sacks Weston LLC has sought refuge in Pennsylvania's bankruptcy court. This development comes on the heels of a damaging scandal involving two former attorneys guilty of underhanded dealings.

Sacks Weston, a cornerstone in Philadelphia's Rittenhouse Square, made its Chapter 11 filing this past Friday.

Andrew Sacks, the managing partner, unveiled a complex financial scenario: The firm's assets and liabilities both range between $10 million and $50 million, spread amongst fewer than 50 creditors.

Diving into the details, over $1.13 million is owed to the primary unsecured creditors. This staggering amount incorporates a $690,000 loan from the firm to itself.

Moreover, the firm has outstanding balances like a $200,000 credit line from PNC Bank, a $124,000 loan from Jordan Litigation Funding, and a whopping $58,000 in overdue rent to Frankel Enterprises Inc., the owners of the prestigious Walnut Street building that's home to the firm's headquarters.

The Texas Connection and A Brewing Storm

But the waters get murkier. The firm has a debt, eclipsing $14 million, anchored to Texas-based litigation funder, Virage SPV 1 LLC. The latter slammed Sacks Weston with a 22-page complaint recently.

This action occurred shortly after Scott E. Diamond, a former pivotal figure in the firm, received a sentence entailing half a year's imprisonment and a three-year probation.

His crime? Concealing case settlements from his fellow partners and illicitly hoarding thousands in legal fees.

Jesse M. Cohen, a former associate, was similarly ensnared in this web, slapped with a three-year probation after profiting from this very scheme.

The ill-gotten gains amounted to a cool $320,000 in fees. To add salt to the wound, Diamond now carries the burden of restitution.

Deals, Allegations, and The House of Cards

Mere days post Diamond's judgment, Virage threw another punch. They lodged a contract breach allegation against Sacks Weston.

The crux? The law firm's alleged failure to split proceeds from numerous cases which were, interestingly, previously pledged as collateral for loans. This tale of intrigue can be traced back to 2017.

Andrew Sacks finds himself in the spotlight for purportedly tipping off Virage about diverting a significant portion of his personal wealth, inclusive of two high-value properties in Philadelphia and New Jersey, to kin, in return for negligible compensation. "Effectively 'judgment proof'," was how Sacks described himself to Virage, implying the assets were untouchable for loan repayments.

David Smith, a stalwart from Smith Kane Holman LLC, Malvern, Pennsylvania, has stepped into the arena, representing the embattled Sacks Weston as the bankruptcy process unfolds.

Established in 1984, the legacy firm, previously christened Sacks Weston Diamond, has championed consumer class actions, whistleblower stances, and intricate litigation. Boasting a rich history, their attorneys, as per the firm's website, have secured an astounding $2.5 billion for clients over four decades.

As the storm clouds gather, representatives for Sacks Weston remained tight-lipped, with no comments as of Tuesday.
