Humboldt County Superior Court Judge Gregory J. Kreis finds himself embroiled in a new round of ethics charges. These accusations stem from his participation in an online debate from his chambers, comments made during a court hearing, and additional allegations.
Judge Kreis Faces New Ethics Charges : A False Statement Uncovered
In February, the California Commission on Judicial Performance brought 19 ethics charges against Judge Kreis, and on April 3, two more were added. One of the new charges involves a debate held on Jan. 23, where Kreis falsely stated he had never been disciplined, despite being reprimanded in 2018. His reelection website also contained a similar video until early March.
Kreis defended his actions, claiming he focused on the California State Bar rather than the commission and was unaware of his prior discipline.
Judge Kreis Faces New Ethics Charges : Online Debate From Chambers
Another charge centers around Judge Kreis’s participation in an online candidates’ debate and filming a campaign video from his chambers. He responded, stating his actions were proper, as he did not don his judicial robe or give any indication that the videos were filmed from his chambers.
Sarcastic Courtroom Comments
The second new charge involves comments made during a July 2022 hearing. When a defendant suggested a continuation date due to contempt charges, Judge Kreis made a remark implying the parties enjoyed each other’s company, which he claims was intended to diffuse tension.
